Self-Serve Cancellations: More Flexibility, More Control, with Briefly

by | Oct 15, 2025 | Guide

At Briefly, we know that plans can change in a flash. Maybe you don’t end up needing the extra car for the weekend, or a last-minute lift falls through. That’s why we’ve introduced a brand-new feature to our customer portal designed to give you more confidence when buying your policy: self-serve cancellations.

Cancel Before Your Policy Starts, In a Matter of Minutes

If your policy hasn’t yet begun, you can now cancel it yourself in just a few clicks. No waiting in a queue and no chasing emails: it’s all handled directly from your Briefly account. Simply,

  1. Log in to the customer portal.
  2. Choose the policy you’d like to cancel.
  3. Follow a quick step-by-step process:
    • Click on the ‘Cancel scheduled policy’ button on your ‘Cover details’ page.
    • You’ll be asked ‘Are you sure?’ — click ‘Cancel policy’ to proceed with the cancellation.
    • A box will then be shown asking ‘Why do you wish to cancel?’
    • Select from one of the reasons on the screen and click ‘Cancel and refund’.
  4. Receive your cancellation confirmation and refund*.

It’s that easy!

Why Self-Serve Cancellation Matters

Temporary insurance should be as flexible as the plans it’s designed to cover. With this new option, you can:

  • Buy with confidence — Secure your cover today, knowing you can cancel if your plans change before the policy begins.
  • Avoid wasting money — Get a full refund* if you cancel at least 15 minutes before your start time (Please note: Policies cancelled within 15 minutes of when they are due to start, or after they have started, will not be able to receive a refund).
  • Stay in control — Manage everything at your own pace, straight from your account.

Important to Know About Refunds

We always try to be transparent about how cancellations work:

  • If you cancel at least 15 minutes before your policy starts, you’ll receive a refund through our new self-serve process. Please be aware refunds can take 3-5 working days to be processed, and will then take 3-5 working days to appear in your account.
  • If you choose to cancel after your policy has started, you can still contact us via webchat or our contact form to do this; however, no refunds are available once cover has started.
  • If you have any questions on how to cancel, or on how our refunds work — please contact us via our webchat, located on the right of your screen.

That’s why self-serve cancellation is such a valuable feature: it gives you flexibility right up until your cover kicks in.

The Bottom Line

With Briefly, short-term car insurance is designed to fit around your life; with self-serve cancellations, it’s even easier to adapt when plans change. More control and greater peace of mind.
