Documents required to release your vehicle
- Seizure notice
- Driving Licence
- Proof of address (bank statement or utility bill)
- Proof of vehicle ownership
- Valid MOT (or proof of MOT appointment)
- Valid insurance that permits release from a Police compound
- Valid road tax
You will also need to pay the release fee and any storage costs.

Your Eligibility
Some of your eligibility criteria are:
- Registered keeper and owner of vehicle
- Full UK Driving Licence (held for 12 months+)
- Aged 24 – 69
- Resident in UK Mainland
(Not Northern Ireland) - Can have made a recent car insurance claim
- We consider drivers with up to 9 penalty points in the last 5 years
Vehicle Eligibility
Key eligibility criteria include:
- Car; Van; Pickup truck; Box van; Luton van; Refrigerated/insulated van; Motor caravan; Horsebox
- Registered in UK
- Has an MOT (unless driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment)
- £500 to £50,000 in value
- Is not SORN (unless to drive to a pre-booked MOT). SORN stands for Statutary Off Road Notification. If your car is SORN it cannot be parked or driven on a public road. Read more
- Not imported, left hand drive, or modified
(except if modified for mobility reasons) - Not a hire or rental vehicle
Why do you need impound insurance?
To free your vehicle you need an insurance policy that explicitly permits the release of a vehicle from a police compound.
Some motor vehicle insurance policies may not permit the release of the vehicle from a police compound in their limitations of use.

Please have your certificate of motor insurance on hand when driving. The police use MID (Motor Insurance Database), a central record of all insured vehicles, to check that vehicles are insured and this is only updated once a day.
